Memorial services for Billy David Reed, age 77 years, 4 months and 28 days, a lifelong Atoka resident, will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2020, at Brown’s Funeral Service Chapel, in Atoka.
Reed’s ashes will be scattered in the turkey woods, as upon his wishes – per his brother, Jimmy.
Services will be under the direction of Brown’s Funeral Service, in Atoka.
Reed passed away on Saturday, June 6, 2020, in Denison, Texas.
He was born on Saturday, January 9, 1943, to Hassen Albert and Lubell (Chandler) Reed, at Atoka. His father passed away the year he was born and he was raised by the only dad that he knew, Mr. Sam Vinson.
Reed attended Dunbar Grade School and graduated from Atoka High School, in 1961.
He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1962-1983. Reed served during the Vietnam Era. He joined the United States Navy for three years as an aerial photographer, went back into the Navy a few months later, to become a journalist. Reed retired as United States Navy Senior Chief in journalism, in 1983.
Reed delivered the Daily and Oklahoma Times at an early age. He worked before and after school, worked for Skeete Carney Drug Store, Thompson Theater and washed dishes at the Truck Stop. Reed became interested in journalism and photography, early in life. He was a journalist in the U. S. Navy, later after retirement, Reed drove for and owned a Yellow Cab in Charleston, West Virginia.
He enjoyed playing the guitar. Reed taught himself to play, with the help of Gus and Melvin Davis and later played in a local band of Dale Teasley’s.
Survivors include his sister, Kay Francis Reed Mickles of Bethany; brother, Jimmy D. Vinson of Atoka; daughter, Sharon Reed-Walton of Auburn, Georgia; son, David R. Reed of Virginia Beach, Virginia; adopted nephew, Anthony Sinclair of Charleston, South Carolina; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear friends.
Preceding him in death were his father, Hassen Reed; mother, Lubell Vinson; stepdad, Sam Vinson; siblings, Kate Reed Sutter, Estella L. Reed Crawford, Hassen A. Reed, Jr. and Barbara G. Reed-Hankins.
