The Atoka Wampus Cats season opener against the Wildcats of Coalgate resulted in victory for the second year in a row at the Boggy Bottom Bowl.
Atoka travelled to Coalgate on Friday, September 4, 2020, after two weeks of very limited or no practice for most of the team members due to Covid quarantines.
They were able to get in a morning walk though on Friday morning before loading the bus and heading into Wildcat land.
After an Atoka kickoff, the Wampus Cat defense held strong and quickly took over on offense after Coalgate turned the ball over on downs.
Wampus Cat receiver, Tarrin Snow, started things off with a bang and an amazing reception for a big gain on the Wildcat 11 yard line.
Trent Yarbrough finished the drive off with an eleven yard touchdown run. A missed extra point left the score 6-0 with just over six minutes left in the first quarter.
The Atoka defense holds tight again and the Wildcats turn it over on downs, allowing the Wampus Cat offense back on the field.
The very next play, Andrew McCall rambles down the field for a 55 yard touchdown run, bringing the score to Atoka 13, Coalgate 0 wih the extra point kick good.
Atoka’s defense came in clutch on a red zone stand and got the ball back on it’s own 12 yard line.
The next play, Sophomore running back, Andrew McCall, takes the ball 88 yards for a Wampus Cat touchdown.
Kicker Caleb Wingo’s extra point brought the score to 20-0 with just minutes to go in the first half.
Defensive lineman, Quenton Leflore, gets a huge interception for the Atoka defense and brings Tyson Barrett and the Wampus Cat offense back on the field.
This time Tyson Barrett connects with Trent Yarbrough for a 30 yard touchdown pass. Again with a Wingo extra point the score is 27-0 in favor of Atoka, with just seconds to go in the half.
The third quarter starts off with a bang as Tyrell Hill takes it in for a 30 yard touchdown run to give the Wampus Cats their final touchdown for the evening and the score at 33-0.
At this point Coach Cupp and his staff were able to give many of the Junior Varsity Wampus Cat players some much needed varsity playing time.
The final score for the 2020 Boggy Bottom Bowl was 33-14.
The Atoka offense had an impressive 350 yards rushing, and 220 yards passing in the game.
Next week, the Wampus cats will face Talihina for their first home game and Senior night.
The game will be on September 11 at 7:30 p.m. with Senior Night beginning at 7:00 p.m.
