On Sunday, October 18, 2020, Atoka Police Officer Cody Poe was traveling northbound on Highway 69 when he observed a male subject walk from Cedar Street across the Highway, nearly being struck by a vehicle.
Officer Poe activated his emergency lights to prevent traffic from hitting the male or the vehicle that had came to a complete stop to avoid the man.
The subject entered the Choctaw Travel Plaza parking lot where the Officer made contact. Identified as Michael Shane Larson, 30, of Atoka, he appeared to be talking to himself with one hand in his pocket, and the other holding a Sunkist can with a piece of paper sticking out of the lid.
Officer Poe spoke to Larson who had rapid speech and was unable to control his movement.
Larson admitted to using narcotics approximately an hour before when questioned. He was placed under arrest for public intoxication.
Officer Poe picked up the can that Larson had placed on the ground, and noticed a strong odor of gasoline coming from the can.
Larson told the officer the can had gasoline, metal shavings, and sand inside. The purpose was to use if someone attacked him. Larson explained he could light it and throw it towards his attackers to get away.
Larson was transported to the Atoka County Jail for booking.
