The Atoka Wampus Cats took to the field on Thursday, October 15th in a home game against the Hartshorne Miners.
Atoka started out on offense at the 35 yard line after the Miners kick went out of bounds. On the very first play from scrimmage the Wampus Cats completed a 75 yard half back pass from running back Trenton Yarbrough to wide receiver Kollin Ritchie for a touchdown.
With the kicker Caleb Wingo’s extra point, the score was 7-0 less than a minute into the game. Hartshorne took the ball over on the 21 yard line after the kickoff.
Three plays later they punted and Atoka took over on their own 30 yard line. This time after some penalties Atoka is forced to punt it back. Later in the quarter the Wampus Cat offense takes to the field again and running back Trent Yarbrough takes the ball on first down 80 yards for another Atoka touchdown. Again with the extra point by kicker Caleb Wingo made the score 14-0.
Then, in the second Quarter, quarterback Tyson Barrett connects in a 50 yard bomb to wide receiver Jace Jackson for Atoka’s third touchdown of the night and Jackson’s first of the season, increasing the Wampus Cat lead to 21-0.
Atoka struck again with yet another pass play as quarterback Tyson Barrett finds wide receiver Tarrin Snow for a 55 yard touchdown reception. This time with no extra point the Wampus Cat lead extends to 27-0.
Later in the quarter punter Kollin Ritchie punts one inside the one yard line nailing the Miners back against the wall. That would end the half with the score remaining 27-0.
Atoka kicked off in the second half to Hartshorne and quickly got the ball back after the Miners turned it over on downs at the Atoka 41 yard line and both teams struggled to move the ball for the rest of the 3rd quarter.
Hartshorne started the 4th quarter with a failed 34 yard field goal attempt and the score remained 27-0. Atoka took the ball over and marched down the field until running back Trent Yarbrough took it in for a 16 yard touchdown run. With kicker Caleb Wingo’s extra point the score moved to 34-0 which would be the final score.
Atoka’s younger players got a chance at the end and Freshman running back Talon Barrett took advantage with a 48 yard run from Atoka’s 24 yard line to the Miner 24 yard line.
Another thing worth noting is that Atoka scored five touchdowns with four different players scoring in a diverse effort for the Wampus Cat offense.
This week’s game verses Valliant has been canceled due to Covid issues, and homecoming festivities have been postponed. Atoka will next play at Wilburton on October 30th at 7 pm.
The Atoka homecoming festivities has been postponed to Friday, November 6th where Atoka will conclude their regular season verses the Idabel Warriors.
