On Monday, October 19, 2020, Atoka Police Officer Justin Johnson was on routine patrol on Choctaw Street and observed the driver of a green 1995 Toyota Camry not wearing a seat belt.
The driver of the vehicle turned onto Colorado Avenue, and pulled behind a residence.
Officer Johnson spoke to a person walking by the residence that informed him the driver and passenger of the vehicle were hiding in the bushes behind the home.
The Officer exited his patrol unit and walked behind the home to make contact with the driver, identified as Kelton H. Chaffin, 18, of Atoka, who was standing behind a bush.
Chaffin appeared to be nervous, speaking rapidly, and was unsteady on his feet. He admitted to using methamphetamine earlier in the day.
The Camry was searched with Chaffin’s consent. A glass quart jar containing a green leafy substance, a glass smoking pipe with a burnt residue inside, and a white container with burnt marijuana cigarettes inside were located inside the vehicle.
Chaffin advised the officer he did have a medical marijuana license, but did not have the card with him.
He was arrested for public intoxication, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Chaffin was transported to the Atoka County Jail for booking.
