By Dallas Wilson, Atoka Veteran
The Veterans of Foreign Wars held its quarterly meeting last Saturday with Quartermaster Kevin Harris in attendance.
During the meeting, he was awarded a seventy-five year or diamond certificate recognizing that the Atoka Chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars has been in existence for this period of time.
Harris made the announcement and presented the certificate to all members during our monthly meeting, which was held Thursday, November 12, 2020.
All members present were in awe of this accomplishment, and took a moment to reflect back upon those who had the insight to form this chapter; and, recognize all those who had sacrificed, for the freedoms we now enjoy, also, to extend a hand to the future for those who continue to make such sacrifices.
A member of our congregation made the notation that we needed to remember we almost lost this chapter a few short months ago as membership had drastically declined.
This was also discussed with a member asking if this information could be taken to the local newspaper to distribute to the county and its readers to let all know of this accomplishment and to let all veterans know that we need to keep this chapter alive and viable.
This organization is a time machine into the past and a reference to the future to let all know that the price of freedom is high; also, we all need to be vigilant in our responsibilities to the future and to our shared past.
The efforts and foresight of the founding members are deeply appreciated. As a way to show the families of these veterans how much the chapter appreciates their efforts, and to pay reverence to them, the names of each founding member will be listed:
