Funeral services for Minerva Lois (Pope) Benson, age 83 years, 11 months and 27 days, a longtime Atoka resident, were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, 2020, at Brown’s Funeral Service Chapel, in Atoka, with Pastor Ryan Carroll officiating.
Interment was in Cumming Cemetery, at Maud.
Services were under the direction of Brown’s Funeral Service, in Atoka.
Benson passed away on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 at Denison, Texas.
She was born on Saturday, November 7, 1936, to Wiley Oscar and Eular Etta (Mitchell) Pope, at Carr City. Benson was raised in the Maud area and moved to Atoka in February, 1968, from Savoy, Texas.
She graduated from Maud High School, in 1955.
Benson married Robert Benson on Thursday, November 26, 1953, at Maud. They celebrated 66 years of marriage before her passing.
She worked for the newspaper at Maud and was a typesetter for Atoka County Times. Benson started in the early 70’s and also worked in the family printing business, A & B Printing.
Benson was an active member at Old Paths Baptist Church and a long time member of First Baptist Church of Atoka. She enjoyed spending time with family and running the family business.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Benson of the home, in Atoka; children, Toni Benson and wife, Rita, of Stringtown; Kurt Benson of Atoka; Dennis Benson and wife, Pam, of Derby, Kansas; Ruth Benson of Shawnee; Terry Benson and wife, Opal, of Atoka; Kevin Benson and wife, Elaine, of Madill; grandchildren, April Carroll and husband, Ryan, of Atoka; Eric Benson and wife, Rebecca, of Tushka; Mark Benson and wife, Shelby, of Phillips; Katie Benson and fiancé, Stacy Gavin, of Hartshorne; James Benson and wife, Jessica, of Atoka; Kandy Simpson and husband, Shannon, of Atoka; Vanessa Hinds and husband, Kendal, of Derby, Kansas; Taryn Jones and husband, Taylor, of Temecula, California; Kimberly Logue-Goodson and husband, Jason, of Atoka; Matthew Logue and wife, Julie, of Niceville, Florida; Tiffany Logue of Stillwater; Mary Blackburn and husband, Abe, of Stillwater; Amy Logue of Shawnee; Benjamin Benson of Durant; Kristin Turnpaugh and husband, Zach, of Strawn, Texas; Kacy Benson of Madill; Rachel McMurtrey of Stillwater; sister, Donna Poe of Broken Bow; 24 great-grandchildren; along with other relatives and many dear friends.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Wiley and Eular Pope; brothers, Hollis, Carl, Wilmer, and Arley Pope; sisters, Bernice Roop, Mildred Norman and Wanda Harris; grandson, Jared Robert Benson; and a great-granddaughter, Mercedes Elizabeth Barton.
Pallbearers were Matthew Logue, Eric Benson, Benjamin Benson, James Benson, Mark Benson, Travis Carroll, Colten Spears and Stetson Logue.
Honorary pallbearers were Donavan Jones, Gannon Hinds, Jesse Logue, Owen Blackburn, Patrick Logue, Samuel Barton, Tristan Benson and Wyatt Logue.
Family night was held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., on Thursday, November 5, 2020, at Brown’s Funeral Service, in Atoka.
