Graveside services for Virgil Guest Smithart, age 92 years, 2 months and 23 days, a longtime Atoka resident, were held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, January 18, 2021, at Tushka Cemetery, in Tushka, with the Reverend Bill Sluder officiating.
Interment was in Tushka Cemetery, at Tushka.
Services were under the direction of Brown’s Funeral Service, in Atoka.
Smithart passed away on Thursday, January 14, 2021, at Hugo.
He was born on Monday, October 22, 1928, to R. D. and Emma (Combest) Smithart, at Caddo.
Smithart attended Tushka Public School.
He married Shirley U. Lowe, on May 7, 1955. They celebrated 53 years of marriage before her passing in 2008.
Smithart proudly served his country in the United States Army as a MP and he also served in Japan.
He was a maintenance worker for International Paper and Georgia Pacific Paper Company, where he retired in 1980.
Smithart was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed mechanic work, deer hunting, fishing, working in his shop, rebuilding cars and rebuilding his 1972 Mustang Mach I.
Survivors include his daughter, Shirlene Yates and husband, Dicky, of Atoka; son, Kevin Smithart of Tushka; grandchildren, Shirley Cole of Atoka; Brandon Smithart of Coalgate; Justin Reynolds of Tushka; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Madisyn, and Tom Alderson, all of Atoka; and Lexi Smithart of Atoka; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and many dear and loved friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, R. D. and Emma Smithart, wife, Shirley Smithart; sons, Valton and Terry Smithart; brothers, Billy Smithart, Leroy Smithart and Arvil Smithart; sisters, Louise Smith and Audrea Collinsworth.
Pallbearers were Slick Cole, Bobby Anderson, Wayne Smithart, Lynn Kelley, Alfred Elliott and Hoppy McDougal.
Family night was held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., on Sunday, January 17, 2021, at Brown’s Funeral Service, in Atoka.
