Multiple law enforcement officers from the Atoka Police Department (APD) and the Atoka County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) were recognized this month for their exceptional courage and professionalism during a dangerous, life-threatening pursuit and shootout that occurred earlier this year.

The officers were honored at the Atoka City Council meeting on Monday, October 8th, and by the Oklahoma Sheriffs' Association (OSA).

The event, which occurred on May 30, 2025, began when APD Chief Gene Dodson and Lt. Jimmy Taylor initiated a stop at the Arby's parking lot for a vehicle suspected of shoplifting. According to a statement from APD Assistant Chief Brian Snead, the driver refused to comply and sped away. The sudden act resulted in Chief Dodson narrowly escaping being dragged and began a high-speed pursuit.
