Smell of Alcohol and Chewing Gum Leads to Felony DUI Arrest

A routine traffic stop for speeding on Highway 69 quickly escalated last week, leading to the arrest of a Texas man for Felony Driving Under the Influence (DUI) due to prior convictions and driving on a suspended license.

On October 16, 2025, at 5:07 PM, Deputy Chief G. Colley of the Stringtown Police Department observed a gray 2020 Kia Telluride traveling northbound on Highway 69 at 73 MPH in a posted 45 MPH zone. The Deputy Chief initiated a traffic stop near Highway 69 and State Highway 43E.

Upon approaching the vehicle, Deputy Chief Colley immediately detected a strong odor of both alcohol and marijuana emitting from the interior. The driver, identified as Joshua Zimmerman, appeared to quickly chew a handful of peppermint gum as the officer approached.
