Lane/Crystal News

Well, my new computer ate the news I had for this week. So, I am hurriedly rewriting what I can remember… hope this is a good day for remembering.

November 11 is Veteran’s Day. This is the U.S. holiday that honors all who have served in the United States Armed Forces, both living and deceased. The day is dedicated to recognizing their patriotism, service, and sacrifice for the country. It is observed with ceremonies, parades, and other events, and is a celebration of all veterans for their contributions.

The date of November 11th was chosen because it marks the anniversary of the peace agreement that ended World War I in 1918, though the holiday now includes veterans of all wars. A National Veterans Day Ceremony is held each year at Arlington National Cemetery, beginning at 11:00 a.m. with a wreathlaying at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers. Many communities host parades and services, and some businesses offer discounts to Veterans as a way to show appreciation. Unlike Memorial Day, which is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service, Veterans Day is a celebration of the service of all veterans.
