After signing in and receiving their commemorative keychain pendants, the group set out on an afternoon trek through 1.4 miles of rocky terrain and scenic lakeshore views. The event drew a diverse crowd of local residents and four-legged friends, all navigating the 'intermediate' trail together to celebrate the first day of the year at Mc-Gee Creek Lake. New Year’s resolutions are often made in the quiet of a living room, but they are rarely tested on the rocky shelves of the Potapo Trail.

On January 1, 2026, I decided to trade my usual routine for a First Day Hike at McGee Creek Lake. It was a day defined by miscommunication, unexpected crowds, and a very clear reminder that 'sporadic walking' is not the same as 'training.'
