Following President Trump’s announcement on March 5, 2026, nominating U.S. Senator Markwayne Mullin to serve as the Secretary of Homeland Security, Oklahoma Attorney General Gentner Drummond praised the selection as an inspired choice for national security.
Drummond noted that the President’s pick recognizes Mullin’s 'straight-talking' and 'stalwart' leadership, traits the Attorney General believes are essential for leading the Department of Homeland Security at this juncture. Mullin, who currently serves on the Senate Armed Services Committee and three critical subcommittees, is expected to transition to the Cabinet role upon successful Senate confirmation.
Should Mullin resign to join the administration, the responsibility to fill the vacancy falls to Governor Kevin Stitt under Oklahoma’s specific statutory procedures for U.S. Senate seats. According to state law, the Governor has 30 days from the date of the vacancy to appoint an interim senator to represent Oklahoma in Washington.
