With tornado season underway, it's important to remember not to park under an overpass or bridge during severe weather, such as tornadoes or strong winds. These structures can create a wind tunnel effect, which increases wind speed and traps debris, making it more dangerous.
Powerful winds may pull vehicles out from under the structure, and flying debris can cause injuries. In one instance, several cars parked under an underpass during a tornado were sucked out, resulting in injuries and blocked access for emergency vehicles. There's also the risk of the bridge or overpass collapsing onto the road below.
Did you know that the U.S. ZIP Code went into effect in 1963 and the next year, 1964, Smokey Bear, the U.S. Forest Service’s wildfire prevention mascot, received his own ZIP Code. This was needed because of the massive volume of fan mail he received. He is the first and only fictional character to have one, although the President also receives a unique code.
