Do you like to eat at El Adobe in Atoka? Are you aware that the building once was the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church before the Millers turned it into a favorite eating place. A new church was built on Highway 69, where it stands today. Most religious people in Southern Oklahoma, are likely to be associated with a Protestant denomination, so you may find it interesting to learn that the first Catholic Church in what is now Oklahoma was established in Atoka in 1872.
In the late 1800s two brothers, both priests, Michael and Lawrence Smythe, traveled from their assigned church in Fort Smith, Arkansas on a wide swath into Indian Territory as missionaries. Then, Father Michael established St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, the first Catholic congregation in Indian Territory at Atoka, IT in 1872.
