Series of Small Earthquakes Recorded Near Wardville

A sequence of minor earthquakes rattled parts of Atoka and Coal counties over the weekend, with tremors centered near the Wardville area.

According to data recorded by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the seismic activity began early Sunday morning, August 9, when a magnitude 2.9 earthquake struck roughly 22 miles southwest of McAlester, near Wardville, at approximately 6:50 a.m.

A second minor tremor, measuring magnitude 2.5, registered in the same vicinity later that afternoon at around 3:40 p.m. Early Monday morning, August 10, a third quake measuring magnitude 2.7 was recorded in the area at approximately 3:20 a.m.
