Steelmaker and Artist Come Together to Improve Veterans Building United States Marine Corps and Desert Storm Veteran Matthew Johnson, and Oklahoma Army National Guard and Afghanistan War Veteran Dallas Wilson, recently upgraded the entrance to the Atoka County Veterans Building located at 231 E. 1 st Street. Johnson, a master welder, and former VFW post commander, reinforced the porch superstructure, replaced the weather damaged bulletin board, with a locking metal and glass model, while coincidently providing a sheet steel canvas for Wilson. Metal work in this weather is not for the faint of heart, but as it turns out, neither is creating art outside in July and August Oklahoma heat! Submitted photo

Hello Atoka! I know that it has been a while since I have posted anything and there has been a lot that has happened in the times since I last “made an observation.' The main item of interest that I have noted is the change in our weather pattern which has been hot! I was watering my tomato and pepper plants which sorely needed a refreshing drink and looked towards the clear blue cloudless sky.

I saw the sun making its way across the cloudless sky and quietly spoke, 'God, I don't know what it is you are cooking but I think it is done now.' It was so hot that there was not only the absence of clouds, but the birds were absent and they dared not sing for fear of bringing on additional heat. I also noted that the locust dared not chime in for fear of causing the heat to rise even more.

I have noticed, as I start to add years to my age, that the people that I have known for so long are slowly fading from my presence. Over the past few months, I have attended several different funerals and with the attendance of each one I have noted a lost connection with my past. Good memories, cherished memories, and reflections with family members of these friends.
