With recent dry conditions sparking major wildfires across the area, the Atoka County Commissioners voted unanimously Monday to enact a countywide burn ban.
The 14-day ban makes it unlawful to set fire to any forest, grass, range, crop, or wild lands, as well as build campfires, bonfires, or burn trash. Violators face misdemeanor charges carrying fines up to $500, up to one year in prison, or both.
Officials noted that recent local blazes, including the Cox Mountain Road fire, highlighted the urgent need for restrictions, emphasizing that light scattered rainfall will not mitigate the current fire danger.
