Wildfires Present Contamination Risks for Private Well Owners

Persistent high temperatures and dry weather across Oklahoma have elevated the risk of wildfires, which state officials warn can pose hidden threats to private water wells.

According to an advisory from the Oklahoma Water Resources Center, wildfires can cause physical damage and pressure shifts that compromise water quality, rendering well water unsafe for drinking and household use.

Water experts highlighted three primary risks wildfires pose to private well systems: 1. Loss of Well Pressure: System depressurization can trigger backflow, potentially drawing contaminants into the groundwater or filtration setup. 2. Damaged Well Equipment: Heat and physical fire damage can break seals, piping, or wellheads, allowing sediment, debris, and contaminated surface water to enter the well shaft.
