Sheriff Addresses Video Involving Inmate Altercation, Trustee Intervention

Atoka County Sheriff Kody Simpson addressed recent online attention surrounding a leaked video from inside the Atoka County Jail, clarifying department procedures regarding inmate trustees during physical altercations with detention staff.

The video, which has circulated on local social media groups, shows an interaction inside a jail detoxification cell involving jail staff, a Department of Corrections inmate, and an inmate trustee.

According to offense reports from the Atoka County Sheriff's Office, the incident occurred on May 6, 2026, around 8:45 p.m. when Deputy Castleberry and Detention Officer Henry attempted to complete the booking process for Department of Corrections inmate Devarrus Smart. Smart had been placed in the detox cell after refusing to comply with booking procedures and striking Deputy Castleberry in the lower back during an initial escort.
