Speeding Stop Leads to DUI, Cocaine Trafficking Arrest

A traffic stop for speeding and a defective taillight in Atoka County resulted in the arrest of an Arkansas man on multiple charges, including driving under the influence, operating a vehicle without a valid driver's license, and felony cocaine trafficking.

According to a report by Atoka Police Officer Zachary Rice, the incident occurred on May 11, 2025, at approximately 8:02 AM. Officer Rice, while on patrol northbound on U.S. 69 north of Vinita Allen, observed a gray sedan approaching his patrol unit at a high rate of speed. Radar confirmed the vehicle was traveling 87 MPH in a 70 MPH zone.

The driver, identified as Humberto Alonso-Navarrete, was stopped near the north end of the Atoka Police Department's City Limits. Due to a language barrier, Officer Rice used a translator app to communicate with Alonso-Navarrete, who produced a Mexico passport but stated he did not have a U.S. driver's license, only a Mexico license that was not with him. A check revealed Alonso-Navarrete had an Arkansas driver's license number but no valid American license in any state.

While speaking with Alonso-Navarrete, Officer Rice smelled a strong odor of alcohol on his person. Officer Christian Shomo arrived to assist and also noted the smell of alcohol. A preliminary breath test administered by Officer Shomo registered a 0.11 Blood Alcohol Content (BAC). A Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) test showed all six indicators of impairment. Further field sobriety tests were not conducted due to the language barrier and location.

Alonso-Navarrete was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI and was read the Implied Consent Test Request in Spanish. He agreed to a breath test, which was later administered at the Atoka County Jail and showed a BAC of 0.10.

While awaiting a wrecker to impound the vehicle, officers conducted an inventory. Inside the trunk, under the spare tire area, they discovered a ripped Ziplock bag containing approximately 60 grams of a white brick-like powdery substance that emitted a chemical odor and was believed to be cocaine. Subsequent field tests confirmed the substance was cocaine.

Further investigation revealed that Alonso-Navarrete had a prior DUI conviction in Arkansas from June 2024, making a subsequent DUI a felony.

Humberto Alonso-Navarrete was booked into the Atoka County Jail on charges of driving under the influence of intoxicants (felony due to prior conviction), speeding (16-20 MPH over), operating a motor vehicle without a valid driver's license, and trafficking cocaine. The suspected cocaine was properly packaged and submitted for further analysis.
