Lane/Crystal News

Most of the school graduations in Atoka County are completed and I made several. One thing I heard at every one of them were the comments on “how time flies,” referring to the graduate’s age, or maybe it was theirs. Surely, we all remember as a kid when the summer holidays felt like never-ending hours melting away the lazy afternoons? Then, it seems that the older we get the faster time speeds by. So, it appears that there’s an actual science behind that.

Research has shown that the brain processes images faster when we are young and that the rate we process visual information slows down as we age. As we continue to age, the number of neurons that carry electrical signals in our brains increase, then electrical signals must travel a greater distance, which leads to slower signals being processed. The result? We perceive fewer “framesper- second” as we get older, and therefore time feels like it’s passing quicker. Plus, a year for a four-year-old is a much bigger percentage of their overall lifespan than it is for a 40-year-old/ No wonder it feels longer and more significant. So, if you are amazed at how much you remember from the days that seemed to last forever in your youth, it’s not that your experiences were much deeper or more meaningful, it’s just that they were being processed in rapid fire.

Memorial Day is coming up and several people around Lane are getting new flags to fly for the holiday. Memorial Day, a federal holiday held the last Monday in May, falls on May 26th this year. It is the annual day to honor and remember the men and women who died while serving in our military and to take time to appreciate their sacrifice and the freedoms they fought to protect. Most people also decorate family graves at this time.

Usually, the flag is flown at half-staff only during national mourning periods, such as the death of a government official, military member, emergency first responder, or a national tragedy. It is also flown at half-staff on Memorial Day however, the rules are a bit different. On Memorial Day the American flag is flown at half-staff only until noon. Then, it is raised to full-staff for the rest of the day. This is meant to honor those who have died for their country by using the lowered flag during the morning hours to mark the 'invisible flag of death' above as a sign of our mourning. Then, the flag is raised to full staff in the afternoon to symbolize the continuation of our nation after the Civil War. If you have a short flag pole on the side of your house and the flag cannot be flown at half-staff a black streamer called a mourning ribbon is attached to the flag in the morning and taken down at noon.

Thelma’s Thought for the Day: “We have multiplied our possessions but reduced our values. We talk too much, love too seldom, and hate too often. We’ve learned how to make a living but not a life. We’ve added years to life, not life to years.” George Carlin
