Concerned Driver Leads to DUI Arrest

A call from a concerned motorist about a swerving vehicle on Highway 69/75 resulted in a traffic stop and the arrest of an Atoka man on July 26, 2025. Officers determined the driver was operating his vehicle at twice the legal limit for alcohol.

At approximately 9:33 p.m., Officer Cheyenne Gilbert was dispatched to assist a Tushka Police Officer who had observed a white Jeep Wrangler swerving across lane lines and onto the shoulder. With the vehicle outside the Tushka officer's jurisdiction, Officer Gilbert took the lead on the traffic stop, which was conducted near Victory Life Church.

Upon approaching the vehicle, Officer Gilbert and another officer detected a strong odor of alcohol from the vehicle and the driver, identified as Toni Benson. Benson initially hesitated and denied drinking before admitting to having two Miller Lite alcoholic beverages earlier. Benson was asked to step out of his vehicle, a process he struggled with, holding onto a safety handle for support.
