Minor Violations Leads to Major Charges

An Atoka Police officer's traffic stop for a turn signal violation Saturday evening led to the arrest of a driver on suspicion of driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance.

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on August 2, 2025, Officer Christian Shomo observed a black Nissan Sentra fail to signal 100 feet before stopping at Highway 69. The officer followed the vehicle and observed a male passenger discard a cigarette onto the roadway. Officer Shomo then initiated a traffic stop in the turning lane of Boggy Bottom Liquor Store.

The driver, identified as Edgar Mathews, provided a Texas identification card but no driver's license. While speaking with Mathews, Officer Shomo noted he was hyperactive, had slurred speech, pinpoint pupils, and was sweating profusely despite the cool outdoor conditions.
