The Atoka City Council met on Monday, August 4, to address a wide-ranging agenda, approving significant payments for ongoing projects, rezoning requests for local properties, and taking action to fund a new fire engine.
The council voted to approve a rezoning request submitted by Grace Fellowship Church, Inc., to change the zoning for a property on West 1st Street and Minnesota Avenue from R-1 Single Family Residential to R-2 General Residential. The property, located where the old Atoka high school once stood, was acquired by the church in a swap during the redevelopment of East A Street.
A contractor, who was also involved in a previous rezoning request for a project on Jackson Avenue, had approached the church with a plan to build duplexes to be sold to the Choctaw Nation for use as housing for battered women.
