Lawanda Jean Rich, age 74, of Texarkana, TX, went to be with the Lord at her home in Texarkana. She was referred to as “Babe” and “Grand Mommy”.
She was born in Atoka, OK, on August 22, 1950, to Bob and Gladys Nelson.
Lawanda attended Oklahoma State University and obtained her BS degree in Special Education. She was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and numerous college organizations. She was a life-time member of the First Methodist Church.
Lawanda lived an active life raising 3 sons and working diligently in the senior health care business. She had obtained three nursing home administrator licenses from TX, OK, and AR, and worked in facilities in all 3 states. Retired from operating a home health company in 2015, she and her husband traveled the world together.
Lawanda played the saxophone in high school and was the high school drum major. She had a beautiful voice and sang many solos in church while attending school.
In 1978, she was awarded “Business Woman of the Year” in Idabel, OK, for her work with the elderly in McCurtain County. She remained a life-time advocate for the employees that worked for her, helping them with acts of kindness and financial assistance when needed.
She and her husband, John, were married 52 years and were partners and friends. They worked closely together in the senior care business for the past 52 years.
She was a member of the Garden Club, CASA, Women of the Arts, P.E.O., And the “Queen of the Birthday Club” Her family would refer to her as a beautiful, sweet, generous, and precious lady whom we will deeply miss. Her smile lit up a room for everyone. Her joy was contagious, and we know she is with her beloved heavenly family now, in the presence of Jesus.
Lawanda was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Gladys Nelson, and sisters Pat Steel and Barbara West.
Left to keep her memory alive are her husband, John; her three sons, Ryan, John III, and Blake Rich with their wives Stacey, and Lisa, respectively. Her grandchildren: Amy, Gabby, Thad, Spence, Wylan and Liam, all from Texarkana.
